The opening of your copywriter cover letter must grab attention immediately. Avoid generic openers like “I am applying for...”
Strong opening (placeholder numbers):
“After leading a team that grew copywriting output by [X%] at [Company], I was excited to see [Company Name]'s opening for a Copywriter. Your focus on [specific company initiative] aligns with the work I've been doing for the past [X years].”
Weak opening to avoid:
“I am writing to apply for the Copywriter position I saw posted on your website. I believe I am a strong candidate...”
Demonstrate your command of key skills like Advertising copy, Brand voice, Long-form writing. Use specific examples rather than vague claims. Hiring managers for copywriter roles want evidence, not assertions.
Where you have real numbers, use them. Instead of “improved performance”, say by how much, but never invent a figure.
Creativity and communication are often listed for creative & media roles in our job data. Show these through brief stories, not just adjective lists.
Your closing paragraph should do three things: reiterate your fit, show enthusiasm, and make a specific ask.
Reference your portfolio or specific work samples.
Show familiarity with the brand's voice, style, or content.
Highlight creative problem-solving with measurable results.
Mention specific tools and software you master.
